The
forest, rather a large park, and the sites of Hortiatis, Panorama and Oreokastro
are worth a visit.
Hortiatis
Mountain dominates the city, snow-capped in the winter, cool and refreshing
in the summer. The village of Hortiatis is well known for its many tavernas
serving meat delicacies. Spend an evening by the fire with a glass of retsina
(traditional type of Greek wine), an acquired taste which brings the forest
to your palate, and mouth-watering skewered fillet of lamb or kokoretsi,
a speciality made of lamb's liver.
Panorama
As you can tell by its name, this smart city suburb offers a magnificent
view of the surrounding hills and the bay. Its cosmopolitan shopping centre,
with quality patisseries and Chinese restaurants, offers a lovely alternative
to the city centre.
A variety
of fishermen's townlets as well as populous beaches with the names of Aretsou,
Perea, Nei Epivates, Agia Triada, Nea Mihaniona, Epanomi, Asprovalta by
the Thermaikos gulf can offer a special atmosphere and an unforgettable
sunset.
Ecotourism
Eco-tourism
can easily be adapted to Thessaloniki and its surrounding areas because
of its natural beauty and landscape. This form of tourism offers the visitor
the experience to explore the beautiful sites of the country and the environment.
Eco-tourism is slowly being developed by the lakes of Saint Vassilios and
Volvi and in the delta of the main rivers of Axios, Loudias and Aliakmonas.
The place is home for thousands of birds, plants and many flowers. Furthermore
these places are the essential water resources of the area. The lakes can
also be used for fishing and for water-sports.
