Athens, take the 516-kilometer National Road, a four-lane highway that's

Much of the drive is extremely scenic. Although there are gas stations

the Italian ports of Bari, Ancona, or Brindisi to Igoumenitsou on the northwest

The trip takes 7 to 8 hours and is scenically spectacular. The southern
route via Ioannina and Kalambaka to Larissa and the National Road is much
less treacherous than the northern alternative through Kozani--particularly
in winter--and is thus recommended (although snow can close both routes).
Buses from Athens make the
trip to Thessaloniki in about 7 hours, including a 20-minute stop at a
roadside restaurant with toilet facilities. Buses are air-conditioned,
much less expensive than the trains, and usually arrive on time.
