Archaeological
Museum of Thasos
The
first building of the museum was erected in 1934. A new wing is being under
construction since 1990.
The
museum contains three main collections of
-
sculpture
-
pottery
-
architectural
members
The
most important exhibits of the museum are:
-
Clay amphora
from Kastri. Hand-made vessel found at the prehistoric settlement of Kastri.
Dated to the Neolithic period.
-
Cycladic
plate (pinakion) depicting the hero Bellerephon on his winged horse Pegasus,
slaying the three-headed Chimaira with his spear. The technique of the
painting and the multi-coloured effect point to the conclusion that the
decoration was under the influence of the monumental painting. Dated to
the 7th century B.C.
-
Inscription
from the monument of Glaukos in the Agora. Glaukos was the friend of the
famous poet Archilochus of Paros. He took part in the expedition of the
Parians for the foundation of trading ports on the coast opposite Thassos.
Dated to the 7th century B.C.
-
Colossal
statue (h. 3.50 m.) of a young, naked man (kouros), carrying a ram. The
statue is unfinished and it seems that the sculptor abandoned his work
because of a crack in the marble near the left ear. Dated to ca. 600 B.C.
-
Archaic
clay sima from an unknown building of the Archaic period, probably the
Prytaneion. It bears the relief representation of a hunting scene, a subject
very popular in the Archaic period. Traces of bright colours are still
preserved. Dated to 540-525 B.C.
-
Marble
head of Dionysos. It belonged to the colossal statue of the god that decorated
the large platform of the one of the two choregical monuments in Dionysion.
The figure has female features but the calm expression on the face and
the clarity of the plastic outlines (it is a statue of compelling beauty)
date it to the second half of the 4th century B.C.
-
Statue
of a Muse. It stood with the statue of Dionysus on the platform of the
second choregic monument in Dionysion. It is obviously influenced by the
famous statue of Eirene, made by the Athenian sculptor Kephissodotos. Dated
to the first half of the 3rd century B.C.
-
Statue
of Aphrodite with a dolphin and Eros. An elegant statue that stood in a
roofed space, a habit quite common in the Hellenistic period. The figure
of the naked goddess reminds the famous Aphrodite of Praxiteles. Dated
to the 3rd century B.C
