| Patmos
has an impressive variety of goods to offer shoppers, exquisite jewelry,
fine ceramics and high quality leather goods. Tourist shops you find at
island port "Skala", and are open 9 am-10 pm. 7 days the week
There
are several excellent jewelry shops, like Iphigenia and Midas on the harbor,
though Filoxenia and the Art Spot both just behind the main square
in the direction of Hora, have more interesting contemporary designs, often
influenced by ancient motifs. The Art Spot also sells ceramics and small
sculptures, and is well worth seeking out. Farther down the same lane is
Parousia, the best single stop for hand-painted icons and a wide range
of books on Byzantine subjects. The proprietor, Mr. A. Alafakis, is quite
learned in the history and craft of icon painting and can tell you a great
deal about the icons in his shop and the diverse traditions they represent.
