Paros
is a member of the Cyclades Island group in Greece. It lies just west of
Naxos in the Aegean Sea, separated by a 5 mile wide channel. Paros municipality
includes many smaller islands that are uninhabited, and it is the third
largest island in the Cyclades group. Paros is, today, a very popular
tourist destination, due to the beautiful rolling hills, vineyards, and
the serenity of its beaches. Paros largest beach is Chrissi Akti,
or Golden Beach. It lies on the east coast facing toward Naxos. Because
of a constant strong wind, Golden Beach is famed for its wonderful windsurfing.
Parikia is the capital
of Paros, and holds many beautiful sights, such as the ruins of a Venetian
castle, built on a rock beside the sea, and the Church of Ekatondapiliani,
which is one of Greeces most important Byzantine monuments. In Parikia,
you will find traditional Cycladic styles houses, whitewashed with blue
doors, window frames, and shutters.
Naoussa is a beautiful village
and features whitewashed houses and tiny chapels, as well as beautiful
beaches. Marpissa is a larger village where you will find an another ancient
Venetian castle. Paros is also well known for its fine white marble,
used for china and fine marbles all over the world.
