The
variety and extent of Crete's coastline make it possible for bathers to
enjoy an infinite number of different places to swim, all of them lapped
by warm, crystal clear water.
NORTH
COAST
Fodele
beach 23 km west of Iraklion. The sandy
beach is by the highway from Heraklion to Rethymnon and Chania
Agia
Pelagia beach is located 16 km west
of Iraklion. The bay of Agia Pelagia is protected from north-west winds
and the sea is almost always calm.
Ammoudara
beach 5 km west of Iraklion. Long, sandy
beach in an area with many hotels, both large and small. Easy transportation
by public buses or taxi from Iraklion.
Kokkini
Hani beach, 12 km east of Iraklion. There
is a big sandy beach along the main road and some smaller ones.
Gournes
beach, sandy beach 17 km east of Iraklion
Gouves
beach, 18 km east of Iraklion.

COAST
Kokkinos
Pirgos Beach, long sandy beach which is
very shallow close to the fishing port of Kokkinos Pirgos
Matala
Beach. The famous beach preferred by hippies,
who used to live in the many caves of Matala in the late 60's and early
70's. The beach is relatively protected from north winds. The beach of
Matala is usually very crowded.
Loutra
Beach. Nice beach with pebbles 3 km east
of Lentas. The rocly seabed makes it good for snorkelling.
Tsoutsouros
beach The sandy beach of the Tsoutsouros
village. This beach is very popular to the people of Crete, therefore it
may be crowded during the weekends.
Arvi
The pebbly beach of the Arvi village.
Sidonia
A beach with dark sand and tamarisk trees.
Tertsa
is a tiny village with a pebbly beach. |
