Chalkidiki
Greece
|
Chalkidiki,
or Halkidiki, is located in the southeastern portion of Central Macedonia.
The Cholomon mountains lie in the north central area and consist of a large
peninsula in the Aegean Sea, which resemble a hand with three fingers -
Kassandra, Sithonia, and Agion Oros are found on each of the “fingers”.
Polygyros is the capital of Halkidiki,
and is found in the center of the peninsula. Poligyros is built amphitheatrically
style on the foot of Mt. Holomon. Visitors to Polygyros can see the archaeological
museum which holds many pieces from excavations in the area.
Kassandra is the most western of
the three “fingers” of Halkidiki. Kassandra features wonderfully extensive
and sandy beaches and small, quaint villages. The landscape and surrounding
area of Kassandra is almost dreamlike in beauty and charm.
Sithonia is the middle “finger”
of the peninsula, and features a natural beauty in the landscape with sandy
beaches, picturesque harbors, and well wooded areas. Sithonia gives you
a wonderful area in which to appreciate the natural beauty of Greece.
There is natural beauty found throughout
Halkidiki, almost to the point that you assume it has remained untouched
by civilization for centuries. With the majestic mountains that succeed
each other, the wonderfully cool valleys with clusters of trees growing
among amazingly colored wild flowers, and the Aegean Sea, which laps on
the shores of the three prongs of the peninsula, you will instantly get
the feeling that you have left civilization, and found a new, undiscovered
world in Halkidiki.
