Folegandros
is a very small island in the southern part of the Cyclades off the Aegean
Sea. It lies between Sikinos and Milos. The surface area of Folegandros
is only about 12 square miles, and it currently is home to less than 700
locals. The three small villages, Chora, Karavostassis, and Ano
Meria are connected to each other by a paved roadway.
Folegandros is one of the
many secluded Greek Isles that offers visitors a glimpse of nature in its
most serene setting. The beautiful and clear blue waters of the sea at
Folegandros gained it recognition as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.
Sights to see in Folegandros
include beautiful tall cliffs and a very large cave. Chora is the capital
of the Folegandros island and is built on the edge of a 200 metre cliff.
In Ano Meria you will find an Ecological and a Folklore Museum to view
the culture and history of this beautiful island. Our Lady is the most
beautiful church on the island and stands above a section of an ancient
wall.
Most visitors can be found on Angali,
the largest beach on Folegandros, although there are other beaches
that are within walking distance. Ayios Nikolaos is a very popular
beach, and clothes on this beach are optional. Just west from this
beach are Livadaki and Ambeli. Both of these beaches can be reached by
boat or on foot. Katergo is considered Folegandros’ best beach, and is
found at the base of a cliff on Folegandros’ south end.
