Chios
Greece
|
Chios
is located in the Aegean Sea, and is the fifth largest of all the Greek
islands, sitting just five miles from the Turkish coast. Chios is highly
considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean. Chios is home
to the monastery of Nea Moni, from the 11th century, which is now a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Nea Moni holds mosaics from as far back in history
as Constantine IX’s reign.
On Chios you will find beautiful
multi-colored houses, fishing boats, and many nets spread in the water
at the old harbour. Wonderful beaches abound at Kardamila, and in Volissos,
the alpine scenery offers a beautiful natural landscape, as well as the
Venetian fort and the monastery of Agios Georgios. At Anavato and Mesta,
you will see villages that have remained virtually unchanged since the
middle ages, with their cultures and traditions still fully intact. |
