ATHENS GREECE

The Athens Festival
Athens FestivalFrom early June through September, the Athens Festival (also known as the Greek or Hellenic Festival) features famous Greek and foreign artists (including Elton John and Placido Domingo in the summer of 2000) performing on the slopes of the Acropolis. You may catch an opera, concert, drama, or ballet here--and, usually, see the Acropolis illuminated over your shoulder at the same time. To enjoy the performance to the fullest, bring some kind of cushion to sit on (the cushions available are often minimal). Schedules are usually available at the Athens Festival Office, Odos Stadiou 4 (tel. 210 322-1459, 210 331-2400, 210322-3111, or 210 322-3110, ext. 137). The office, in the Spiromilios Arcade, is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30am to 2pm and 5 to 7pm, Sunday from 10am to 1pm; you will have better luck coming here in person than trying to reach the office by phone. If available--and that's a big if--tickets can also be purchased at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (tel. 210 323-2771 or 210 323-5582) several hours before the performance. Shows usually begin at 9pm.

The Lycabettus(Likavitos) Festival
There are usually pop-music concerts (the Pet Shop Boys and the Buena Vista Social Club appreared in 2000) and other special events at the outdoor amphitheater near the top of Likavitos during the summer. For information, check with the Athens Festival Office (see above) or the Likavitos Theater (tel. 210 722-7209). Tickets are sometimes also available at the Ticket House, Panepistimiou 42 (tel. 210 618-9300 or 210 360-8366).

The Rockwave Festival
What started as a one-time event in 1996 has taken place every summer since then, with concerts at various venues in and around Athens. Groups performing in 2000 included Oasis and Supergrass, although a number of last-minute cancellations disappointed fans. For information on what's taking place during your visit, check with the Greek National Tourism Organization or Ticket House

Some other events organized by the Municipality of Athens and other municipalities in Attika
