Amorgos,
the easternmost island of the Cyclades Islands in Greece,
is the closest to the Dodecanese Island group. The main harbour is Katapola,
where you will find the Church of Our Lady Katapoliani, built on the site
of a temple of Apollo. Amorgos offers splendid beaches and architectural
styling. Egiali is the second port, and is a quaint, beautiful village
known for its beautiful sandy beaches. Archeological digs and excavations
have uncovered burial tombs that are believed to prove that Amorgos
existed during prehistoric times, specifically during the first of the
Cycladic Civilization around 2000 to 3200 BC.
Due to its
small area, the limited room availability, and the fact that the road network
is not yet finished, Amorgos was often neglected by tourists, however,
the beautiful beaches and the scenic landscaping of the area has been attracting
more tourism each year.
Transport
to Amorgos is easy by ferry from Piraeus, Naxos, and Paros. The
landscape of Amorgos is much more natural and rough than that found
in neighboring islands, but the crystal clear waters are famous throughout
the Cyclades, and the hustle and bustle of the larger islands is not found
in Amorgos, instead you will be treated with a quiet and serene atmosphere,
even during the busy summer season.
