to the sea by a narrow canal

Nikolaos derived its name from Saint Nicholas, who is the patron saint

One
of the main tourist attractions located in Agios Nikolaos is Spinalonga,
which is the most famous island on Crete. The fortress was built
during Venetian times with material used in an ancient fortress, and sits
upon a beautiful rock in the Bay of Elounda.
